About this Role

We are seeking a Python Backend Developer to join our Infrastructure Engineering team within Software & Product Infrastructure. This role is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining scalable, high-performing back-end applications and services using Python and the Django framework. Working within a modern microservices environment, the role combines software engineering expertise with client-facing consultancy responsibilities, helping stakeholders make informed technical decisions while delivering robust, secure and reliable solutions.
The successful candidate will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from solution design and implementation through to deployment, optimisation, technical documentation and continuous improvement, while collaborating closely with product, engineering and client teams.

What you’ll do

  • Develop high-quality, well-tested back-end services and RESTful APIs using Python and Django.
  • Write clean, maintainable and efficient code aligned with business requirements and technical specifications.
  • Build, integrate and maintain microservices and associated data access layers.
  • Ensure reliable, consistent and high-performing integration with databases and related platforms.
  • Collaborate with front-end developers to define, implement and maintain API contracts.
  • Work closely with product managers and stakeholders to deliver solutions aligned with business objectives and timelines.
  • Participate in solution planning, architecture, development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance activities.
  • Conduct code reviews to ensure quality, consistency, maintainability and adherence to development standards.
  • Debug, troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in an efficient and structured manner.
  • Optimise application performance through caching strategies, query optimisation and efficient data access patterns.
  • Promote software engineering best practices, including version control, peer review and continuous integration.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation covering code, APIs, services and development processes.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing by documenting technical solutions and producing developer guidance materials.
  • Evaluate and adopt relevant technologies, tools and frameworks that support innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical consultancy and strategic guidance to clients regarding technology selection, development approaches and solution roadmaps.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients through proactive communication and delivery excellence.
  • Gather feedback, communicate progress updates and support alignment between technical delivery and business expectations.
  • Support onboarding activities and facilitate knowledge-transfer sessions for new team members.
  • Share technical expertise through mentoring, documentation and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives, investigations, process improvements and cross-functional projects where relevant.

Who you are

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in back-end development with a strong focus on Python and Django.
  • Strong proficiency in Python development and the Django framework.
  • Experience designing, developing and maintaining RESTful APIs.
  • Solid understanding of relational databases and SQL.
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture and integration patterns.
  • Experience working with version control systems and software build tools.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies in collaborative delivery environments.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Commitment to continuous professional and technical development.
  • Basic understanding of containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes is advantageous.
  • Experience with message brokers and asynchronous processing technologies is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with observability practices including logging, metrics and distributed tracing is desirable.
  • Experience with testing frameworks would be an advantage.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is beneficial.
