About this Role
We are seeking a Python & Django Backend Software Engineer to join our Infrastructure Engineering team in Romania. You will design, build and maintain modern, scalable server-side applications, RESTful APIs and data-access layers using Python and Django, working within a microservices architecture.
You will contribute across the development lifecycle, from solution and system design through development, testing, deployment and maintenance. The role also involves integrating databases, third-party services and other systems, while supporting the gradual decomposition and re-platforming of monolithic applications into microservices.
Alongside hands-on engineering, you will provide technical consultancy, contribute to technical decisions and best practices, and support colleagues through mentoring, documentation and knowledge-transfer activities.
What you will do
- Design, develop and maintain high-quality, well-tested back-end services and RESTful APIs using Python and Django.
- Build and maintain microservices and integrations with relational databases, search and logging infrastructure, other systems and third-party services.
- Contribute to the gradual decomposition of monolithic applications into microservices in line with the organisation's established microservices reference architecture.
- Translate business requirements into back-end service and component designs that address scalability, security and performance.
- Work with front-end developers to define and integrate API contracts.
- Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders to support successful and timely delivery.
- Contribute to planning, solution design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance.
- Review peer code for quality, performance and adherence to agreed coding standards.
- Debug and troubleshoot technical issues and identify appropriate solutions.
- Improve application performance through caching, query optimisation and efficient data-access techniques.
- Apply and promote engineering practices including version control, code reviews and continuous integration.
- Document code, APIs, microservices and service architecture, including technical specifications and diagrams.
- Identify technical risks within service designs and propose appropriate mitigations.
- Contribute to the evaluation of tools, frameworks and technologies and provide input into the team's technology stack.
- Support the onboarding of new colleagues by preparing and delivering knowledge-transfer sessions.
- Build technical redundancy across the team by creating, sharing and explaining documentation, operating procedures and solution or architecture designs.
- Provide technical support, mentoring and guidance to colleagues across different levels of experience.
- Contribute to relevant team, departmental and organisational initiatives, including technical investigations, analysis, process documentation and knowledge sharing.
Who you are
- You have 5+ years of back-end development experience, with a strong focus on Python and Django.
- You hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or have equivalent practical experience.
- You have strong practical proficiency in Python and the Django framework.
- You have experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
- You have experience working with relational databases and SQL.
- You understand microservices architecture, distributed systems, design patterns and integration patterns, with practical experience contributing to migrations from monolithic applications to microservices.
- You are comfortable working with version-control systems and build tools.
- You understand Agile/Scrum ways of working and can contribute effectively within collaborative, fast-moving environments.
- You bring effective problem-solving skills, attention to detail and an ability to manage multiple priorities.
- You can explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- You actively develop and expand your technical knowledge.
Nice to have:
- Understanding of containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with message brokers and asynchronous or background processing.
- Familiarity with observability practices, including logging, metrics and tracing.
- Experience using testing frameworks.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
