Location: Newbury + Hybrid
Salary: Excellent basic salary plus bonus and Vodafone benefits
Working hours: Full time 37.5 hours per week – Monday to Friday

What you’ll do

As a Big Data Engineer, you’ll play a key role in building and maintaining the platforms, pipelines, and processes that power advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI-driven decision making. Working alongside talented Data Engineers, Data Scientists, DataOps Engineers, and DevOps Engineers, you’ll ensure our data is reliable, secure, and accessible, enabling personalised customer experiences and delivering real business value. If you enjoy solving complex challenges, collaborating with diverse teams, and creating scalable data solutions, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

You’ll join our Big Data team and help bring our Unified Data Platform vision to life. By combining technical expertise with collaborative problem-solving, you’ll support the delivery of trusted, high-quality data solutions that drive innovation across VodafoneThree.

You will:

  • Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable data ingestion pipelines that align with engineering best practices.
  • Work closely with Data Engineers, Data Scientists, DataOps Engineers, and DevOps Engineers to ensure data availability, reliability, and quality across our platforms.
  • Aassess, monitor, and improve data quality, raising and resolving issues proactively to maintain trusted datasets.
  • Develop and optimise large-scale data processing solutions capable of handling significant data volumes securely and efficiently.
  • Create and maintain clear documentation, applying practices such as defensive programming and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to agile delivery, taking ownership of your sprint commitments while supporting teammates to achieve shared goals.
  • Partner with stakeholders across the business to deliver solutions that support strategic initiatives, customer insights, and marketing campaigns.
  • Help advance our next-generation analytics platform by contributing to the evolution of our Unified Data Platform.
  • Support the adoption of Agentic AI frameworks, helping to enable AI-powered data engineering use cases and innovative ways of working.
  • Contribute to the ongoing performance, resilience, and transparency of our Big Data ecosystem.

    

Who you are

  • Previous experience assessing and improving data quality using SQL and/or Python.
  • Ability to develop scalable data pipelines using technologies such as Spark, PySpark, Hive, and BigQuery.
  • Vast experience working with large and complex codebases, using tools such as GitHub, GitLab, Gitflow, EnvFlow, or Fork/Pull workflows.
  • You’ll be comfortable working with development environments and command-line tools, including PyCharm, Visual Studio Code, Bash, or Zsh.
  • Showcase hands-on experience using notebook technologies such as Jupyter, Zeppelin, or Google Datalab for analysis, prototyping, and visualisation.
  • You’ll bring experience working with cloud-based Big Data platforms and services, including AWS and/or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Ability to thrive in agile environments, with experience working within Scrum, Kanban, or similar delivery frameworks.
  • Sound understanding of software and data lifecycle management principles and apply them thoughtfully in your work.
  • You’ll combine analytical thinking with creativity to solve problems and continuously improve solutions.
  • Be a supportive and collaborative teammate, who values different perspectives and enjoys sharing knowledge.
