Role Purpose

Role purpose:

We are embarking on a journey to establish a robust and proactive Cloud Finance Management (FinOps) practice. This is a greenfield opportunity to define and implement the strategy, processes, and tooling required to optimize cloud spending, improve cost visibility, and drive financial accountability across their cloud environments, initially focused on AWS with a clear roadmap to include GCP and Azure. As the Lead Cloud Economist, you will be instrumental in building this critical function from the ground up, working closely with engineering, finance, and business stakeholders.

 

Responsibilities

Practice Vision and Strategy:

  • Develop and articulate a clear vision and strategic roadmap for the Cloud Finance Management practice, aligned with the customer's business objectives and cloud strategy.
  • Define the scope of services, key performance indicators (KPIs), and success metrics for the practice.
  • Anticipate future needs and proactively plan for the evolution of the practice to support multi-cloud environments (GCP, Azure).

           Practice Establishment and Implementation:

  • Lead the end-to-end setup of the Cloud Finance Management practice, including defining processes, establishing governance frameworks, and selecting appropriate tooling.
  • Develop and document policies, standards, and best practices for cloud cost management, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Establish mechanisms for cost allocation, chargeback/showback, and accountability across different teams and business units.
  • Cloud Cost Optimization and Analysis (AWS Focus Initially):

            Multi-Cloud Strategy and Implementation (GCP and Azure):

  • Develop a strategy for extending the Cloud Finance Management practice to encompass GCP and Azure, considering the unique cost models and optimization levers of each platform.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate multi-cloud cost management tools and platforms.
  • Establish consistent reporting and governance across all cloud providers.

Responsibilities

            Stakeholder Management and Collaboration:

  • Build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with engineering teams, finance stakeholders, business leaders, and procurement.
  • Communicate cloud cost insights, trends, and recommendations clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Drive a culture of cost awareness and financial accountability within the organization.
  • Provide training and guidance to teams on cloud cost management best practices.

             Tooling and Automation:

  • Evaluate, select, and implement cloud cost management and optimization tools (native cloud provider tools, third-party solutions).
  • Develop automation scripts and workflows to streamline cost reporting, analysis, and optimization tasks.
  • Ensure data accuracy and integrity within the cost management platforms.

             Forecasting and Budgeting:

  • Develop and implement cloud cost forecasting models and processes.
  • Collaborate with finance to integrate cloud spending into the overall budgeting process.
  • Monitor actual spending against forecasts and provide variance analysis.

             Continuous Improvement:

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest cloud pricing models, service offerings, and cost management best practices across AWS, GCP, and Azure.
  • Continuously evaluate and refine the Cloud Finance Management practice to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
