Role Purpose/Business Unit:

 

Responsible for providing legal advice on a broad range of matters relating to Vodacom’s Technology and Fixed Services in a manner which fully protects Vodacom’s legal interests and addresses or mitigates associated risks. 

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Responsible for providing accurate, effective, and timely advice, analysis and support at an expert level on complex matters of significant, strategic value to Vodacom’s Technology & Fixed Services functional areas. 
  • Review, negotiate and draft a wide range of contracts and legal documents relating to Technology & Fixed Services.
  • Negotiate complex transactions relating to Technology & Fixed Services and provide legal advice regarding these transactions to senior business stakeholders in a manner which fully protects Vodacom’s legal interests and address or mitigate the company’s risk exposure.
  • Provide guidance on how Vodacom can use technology to drive business growth while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Keep business stakeholders updated and briefed on key projects and risk management within the regulatory space.
  • Ensure that all legal matters are reported and managed in accordance with company governance requirements and processes, delegation of authority, and Group Code of Conduct.
  • Actively participate in the broader Vodafone and Vodacom legal community to bring benefit from experience, expertise, and synergies to Vodacom.
  • Keep Managing Executive: Legal Affairs and/or Chief Legal Risk and Compliance Officer (as the case may be) informed /involved on major or complex issues.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

 

  • LLB Degree and admitted attorney with a minimum of 8 – 10 years post qualification experience.
  • Proven track record in providing strategic legal advice to clients in Technology and Fixed Services.
  • Prior experience working in Technology law practice and/or department within a major law firm or reputable corporate.
  • Fluency in English is mandatory.
  • Extensive commercial law, drafting and negotiation experience, with ability to provide timely and innovative legal solutions in a fast- moving industry.

Core competencies, knowledge, and experience:

 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry practices, laws and regulations relating to Technology & Fixed Services, with a deep understanding of the unique legal challenges faced by communications companies.  
  • An in-depth understanding of Fixed Services as well as Technology in the communications industry (including but not limited to Network Engineering, Access & Transport Engineering and Network Management) and demonstrable wide-ranging commercial experience.  
  • A good understanding of technical solutions and tools, and general knowledge of the tech industry.
  • Tech-savviness and strategic foresight, developed through practice, to guide Vodacom effectively in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
  • Highly developed decision-making, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player with strong negotiating/persuasive skills.
  • Strategic thinking, analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • A solutions-focused, engaging approach whilst maintaining a high degree of professionalism, ethics, and integrity.
  • An agile (think on your feet and flexible around business priorities), hands-on professional with a strong sense of initiative, pro-activity and an investigative mind-set.
  • Commercial acumen, customer focused and ability to understand trade-offs/balance between business risk and legal compliance.
  • External perspective, i.e., anticipate market changes and recommend viable solutions.
  • Proactive stakeholder engagement.
  • Proactive awareness and communication of Fixed Services and Technology related developments within the telecommunications industry.
