Role Purpose/Business Unit:
The Senior Specialist: Legal Affairs role is a mid-level, generalist legal role, with a focus on drafting, vetting and negotiating a broad range of commercial agreements of moderate complexity, as well as providing legal advice and support across a broad range of matters, in a fast-paced telecommunications and technology environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Assist with drafting, vetting and negotiating a diverse range of commercial arrangements of moderate complexity, including in relation to procurement, licensing, sponsorship, partnerships/collaborations, POCs, infrastructure/ network/ data sharing, IP, connectivity services, submarine cables, roaming, interconnect, MVNOs, IRUs, leases, intercompany agreements, NDAs, digital agreements and other agreements relating to emerging platforms and non-traditional offerings.
- Provide support on litigation matters and on matters that require competition law assessment/ guidance/ inputs, including by information gathering, reporting, preparing/ vetting responses/ attestations/ affidavits, updating policies and ensuring compliance with the competition law compliance programme.
- Assist with drafting agreements and provide support in relation to acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures, infrastructure sharing and intra-group reorganisations/ agreements.
- Prepare clear written advice and recommendations that balance legal risk and commercial objectives.
- Identify and propose practical risk mitigants and positions consistent with Group policies and business risk appetite.
- Keep more senior team members and other stakeholders updated and briefed on projects and risk management concerns on a regular basis. The level of oversight and supervision in respect of this role is expected to be light to moderate, but will vary depending on the nature of the work.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and alignment with Group governance requirements.
- Proactively liaise with, coordinate and include input, from various stakeholders across the Group and in the markets, on an as needed basis.
- Assist the legal team with collating information for reports from various stakeholders across the Group and in the markets, and finalising the reports.
- Prepare, maintain, improve and socialise contract templates, clause templates, policies and playbooks in line with best practice and evolving Group requirements.
- Assist the legal team in promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration to leverage learnings and drive synergy benefits.
The ideal candidate for this role will have:
- LLB degree and admitted attorney.
- Minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience within a leading law firm and/or an in-house legal team, preferably in the telecommunications, media and/or technology sectors.
- Excellent drafting skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrable experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements and documents and advising on legal issues.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and to assess when to escalate matters or risks of a more complex or serious nature to more senior members of the legal team on an as needed basis.
- Good interpersonal skills and experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.

- Solutions orientated, whilst maintaining professionalism, ethics and integrity.
Core competencies, knowledge, and experience:
Sound knowledge of contract law, significant exposure to drafting and negotiating various types of agreements and familiarity with applicable legal and regulatory frameworks in South Africa, including consumer protection, competition, intellectual property and privacy/data protection laws.
