Role Purpose/Business Unit:

  • Define and implement a Campus HSE plan
  • Drive standard and policy implementation on campus and review implementation effectiveness
  • Initiate transformational drives within the campus to move HSE ownership to employees 
  • Develop, empower and conduct safety inspections in line with a site supervision model 
  • Coordinate visible leadership initiatives and track cultural changes on behaviour and attitude
  • Manage and update the HSE system with current information and records
  • Ensure campus HSE mandatory training and legal appointments are kept up to date 
  • Train or facilitate the training of relevant staff and contractors on HSE related statutory requirements
  • Ensure an up-to-date medical surveillance program is maintained for campus employees
  • Support the drive of the environmental strategy on campus through key stakeholders
  • Participate in internal and external audits as well as policy reviews and statutory enquiries
  • Identify high risk projects and ensure contractor compliance and project safety compliance prior to commencement
  • Project manage special HSE related projects including the task-group, project plan and take responsibility for the project deliverable
  • Provide specialist HSE support and consultation on campus
  • Collate data and compile qualitative and quantitative reports aligned with Exco and board reports
  • Identify HSE risks, and methodically calculate risk. Identify and implement control plans to mitigate or manage the risk to an acceptable level
  • Ensure periodic review of the risk assessment with the associated controls to determine effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations, follow through on corrective actions and ensure all supporting evidence efficiency is up to date on system prior to close off
  • Create a sharing and learning platform to promote HSE awareness on campus
    HSE supplier compliance management

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

  • Matric essential
  • 3-5 years’ relevant experience (Essential)
  • 4 year Degree/National Diploma in a Safety related field (Essential)
  • Certificate in Environmental Management (Advantageous)
  • A Completed NEBOSH/SAMTRAC Certificate 

 

Core competencies, knowledge and experience :

ISO 45001 - detailed knowledge and ISO 14001 -basic knowledge
South African Health and Safety legislation - detailed knowledge  
Occupational Safety concepts - detailed knowledge  
ILO Standards – basic knowledge
Risk Management principles and/or ISO 31000 – basic knowledge
Project management principles  
Computer literacy
Interpersonal   
Communication (verbal and written)
