Role Purpose/Business Unit:

 

  • The Senior Specialist: DevOps Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of mission-critical systems and services within a complex telecommunications environment.
  • This role blends software engineering with platform operations, focusing on system health, automation, observability, and proactive incident management. The DevOps Engineer applies a deep understanding of production environments to ensure service-level agreements (SLAs) are consistently met while driving continuous improvements in Mean Time to Acknowledge (MTTA) and Mean Time to Restore (MTTR).
  • The Senior DevOps Engineer designs and implements automated workflows using Python, AWS Lambda, Jenkins pipelines, GitLab CI/CD, and PagerDuty Runbook Automation to enable intelligent alerting, auto-remediation, and operational efficiency.
  • They collaborate closely with Cloud Platform Engineers, Development, Operations, and Architecture teams to embed reliability engineering principles across the full software development lifecycle, while ensuring infrastructure supports high availability and automation at scale. Experience working with AWS-native container orchestration platforms such as Amazon EKS, along with hands-on familiarity with AWS managed services including S3, EBS, EFS, Redis (ElastiCache), OpenSearch, SQS, Lambda, KMS, and IAM is essential. Exposure to GitLab-based CI/CD pipelines and PagerDuty Runbook Automation for incident runbooks is highly valued.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Operational Excellence: Maintain, monitor, and optimize the health of services in alignment with defined SLAs, prioritizing reduction of MTTA and MTTR  across critical systems.
  • Automation Leadership: Design, implement, and maintain end-to-end automation workflows using Python scripting, AWS Lambda functions, Jenkins pipelines, and GitLab CI/CD integrations to reduce manual intervention and improve recovery time objectives. Leverage PagerDuty Runbook Automation for intelligent incident response and standardized remediation procedures.
  • Incident Management: Lead resolution of critical incidents, drive root cause analysis (RCA), and implement corrective actions; conduct structured post-incident reviews to drive learning and improvement.
  • CI/CD Enablement: Support infrastructure automation and release management through modern CI/CD pipelines, particularly leveraging GitLab and Jenkins, to enable fast, reliable, and traceable deployments.
  • Platform Collaboration: Partner with Cloud Platform Engineers and Architects to ensure platform services are secure, scalable, observable, and aligned with reliability and performance goals.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

 

  • Matric / Grade 12 essential
  • 3-Year Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline essential
  • 5+ years of professional experience in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or Cloud Infrastructure roles essential
  • Demonstrated experience with Python, AWS Lambda, Jenkins, GitLab, PagerDuty, and observability platforms (e.g., AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, AppDynamics)
  • Telecommunications industry experience is strongly preferred
  • A strong foundation in AWS cloud technologies, with a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development through relevant cloud certifications. Holding or actively pursuing AWS certifications is considered a distinct advantage.

 

Core competencies, knowledge and experience :

  • DevOps Principles: Deep understanding of DevOps practices and site reliability engineering fundamentals, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, service-level indicators (SLIs), SLAs, incident response frameworks, and reliability metrics.
  • Automation & Scripting: Advanced scripting and automation skills with hands-on experience in Python, AWS Lambda, Jenkins pipelines, GitLab CI/CD integrations, and PagerDuty Runbook Automation.
  • CI/CD Practices: Strong proficiency in CI/CD methodologies and tooling, including GitLab, Jenkins, and related deployment automation frameworks.
  • Observability Expertise: Hands-on experience with monitoring, alerting, and observability platforms such as AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, AppDynamics, or OpenTelemetry.
  • Cloud & Container Platforms: Practical experience managing production workloads in AWS, with a strong focus on native services including S3, EBS, EFS, ElastiCache, OpenSearch, SQS, Lambda, KMS, IAM, CloudWatch, and CloudTrail. Experience with container orchestration platforms like Amazon EKS is essential. Exposure to OpenShift is considered an added advantage.
