Role Purpose/Business Unit:

 

  • The Specialist: DevOps Engineer plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing the operational excellence and unwavering availability of our applications. The core purpose of this position is to serve as a key member of the application support team, providing hands-on technical expertise to ensure services are reliable, performant, and stable. This involves proactive monitoring to anticipate and prevent issues, coupled with a swift and effective response to resolve incidents and restore service when problems arise.

 

  • This role actively applies modern DevOps methodologies to bridge the gap between development and operations, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and efficiency. By contributing to the implementation and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines, the specialist helps to streamline the delivery of software while maintaining stringent quality and stability standards. The role is instrumental in analyzing application performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing optimizations that directly enhance the end-user experience and support business objectives.

 

  • Ultimately, the Specialist: DevOps Engineer is a guardian of the production environment's health and resilience. Through close collaboration with business users, development squads, and other technology teams, this individual ensures that the entire application lifecycle—from deployment to daily operation and eventual decommissioning—is managed securely and efficiently. This includes contributing to vital functions like disaster recovery, security vulnerability management, and technology obsolescence planning to safeguard our services for the future.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Application Support & Incident Resolution: Troubleshoot and resolve application and system issues, ensuring permanent fixes are implemented and monitored. You will be involved in resolving incidents at all levels of complexity.
  • Monitoring & Proactive Health Checks: Monitor application health using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and AppDynamics. Analyze logs and metrics to identify performance bottlenecks, assess trends, and proactively address potential issues.
  • Automation & Process Improvement: Support the implementation and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab, ArgoCD, and Artifactory, and contribute to the automation of operational tasks to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Management: Interface with various stakeholders, including business users, other Technology Teams, change management, and vendors, to effectively resolve operational issues and manage system changes.
  • Service Resilience & Security: Participate in the execution and testing of disaster recovery plans, contribute to security vulnerability remediation, and assist in managing technology obsolescence to ensure a secure and resilient service.

The ideal candidate for this role will have:

 

  • Matric / Grade 12. (Essential)
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a DevOps or Application Operations role, including working in a 24/7 support environment. (Essential)
  • A 3-year Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or a related field. (Essential)
  • Relevant certifications in AWS (e.g., DevOps Engineer, SysOps Administrator) or knowledge of ITIL principles. (Desirable)
  • Experience in the telecommunications industry. (Advantageous)

 

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

  • DevOps & Cloud Expertise: Strong knowledge of DevOps methodologies, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Openshift), supported by hands-on proficiency with core AWS Services (EKS, EC2, S3, RDS, OpenSearch/ELK) and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
  • Automation & Scripting: Demonstrated ability to improve operational efficiency through automation, with proficiency in languages and tools such as Python, Ansible, AWS Lambda, UiPath, or Rundeck.
  • Monitoring & Application Support: In-depth experience in application support and performance management, utilizing monitoring, logging, and observability toolchains such as AppDynamics, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, and PagerDuty.
  • Agile Methodologies & Collaboration: Proven experience working within a large-scale agile environment utilizing Kanban, with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse technology and business teams.
  • Operational Excellence & OS Proficiency: A strong foundation in operational processes like incident and change management, coupled with essential proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems.
